Canadian R&B Pop star SH3 embraces the strange and eclectic in her new music video for her single “Stranger Things”.
“Stranger Things” is the second single from SH3’s “H2 Zoom Voicenotes” project following the release of “Gelato”, which has reached 175,000 views on YouTube since it’s release in July and is still counting!
“The making of this video has been quite a journey,” SH3 — pronounced ‘she’ — explains. “We shot this video during the summer of 2019 and it took until now where I feel it’s ready to share with the world.”
The title of the song shares the same name as the hit Netflix series, and that is of no coincidence. “When I heard the beat by ProdByBeatcoins & NdroiDBeats, the main synth reminded me so much of the theme for Stranger Things, I thought to myself how cool it would be to write a song inspired by the show. I’m a super fan, which goes without saying.” SH3 smiles.
The concept for the music video is Myrtle Manor, meets 90s nostalgia mixed with tributes to the Netflix series. For example, the coat SH3 wears covered in lights pays homage to the iconic Christmas lights featured in Season 1. “I hand-made that jacket,” confesses SH3, “not the jacket itself of course, but I attached battery powered lights to the fabric as an ode to the show.”
Not only did SH3 create the illuminating number, but she styled all her looks for this video. “I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to look like and what I wanted to wear. I’m such a DIY lover, and it was so much fun to brainstorm looks. My favourite piece has to be the fluffy trim robe. It just screams extravagance! When it came to the looks of the girls, that was fun to brainstorm as well. We suggested one of the girls should wear a mask (which she does) and we would never have guessed in the next year, masks would be part of our daily lives. Watching the video now you might think it was shot in 2020.”
The video was directed by Colin Mercer from Suntola Productions with the help of cinematographer Alex Lieu. She expresses much gratitude to everyone involved including her friends who made cameos and helped her with location. “Three of my closest friends are in this video which makes it that much more special to me. To have them involved and join me in my wacky ideas means the world!” SH3 continues, “Another friend of mine really came through with the location. I knew I wanted the video to center around a pool, and after researching possible Airbnb rentals a friend of mine offered her backyard which has a large above-ground pool. The aesthetic was perfect and I am forever grateful we were able to use it!”
No stranger to the struggles women face as they break into the music industry, it is no coincidence that, phonetically, her name is the female pronoun. SH3 is also very aware of the healing capabilities music offers and has used the female pronoun as an acronym for “sound healer” with the addition of her favourite number. Not only a vocalist and songwriter, SH3 is a producer and engineer in a field that is heavily male dominated. “Representation is imperative in the pursuit of equality,” SH3 says. “I hope that making my presence known as a woman fulfilling these roles, other young girls can be inspired to do the same.”
Her walk matches the talk, and then some; upon receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts Music degree from York University, she began writing professionally in Toronto’s thriving hip-hop scene, released LP Heart of Gold, and followed up with H2 Zoom Voicenotes. She’s worked with a lengthy list of artists, including Preme (f.k.a P. Reign), Yo Goti, Kristina Maria, Mark Pellizzer, Nawlage and more, done a series of writing sessions with Kim Davis, and now-longtime collaboration team, ProdByBeatcoins; in 2019 alone, SH3 wrote and performed features on over 70 tracks for artists from all over the world.
In addition to features, she also includes harmony stacks to back them, for which she has quickly and increasingly gained notoriety; in 2017, actor/artist/photographer, Keegan Allen, best known for his role in Pretty Little Liars, personally reached out to SH3 to cover his single, “Million Miles Away,” acapella and in harmony, which he then reposted to his more than six + million followers on Instagram. In 2018, SH3 had the honour of working with legendary engineer Eddie Kramer as the additional vocalist on Toronto artist Taylor Abrahamse’s debut album.
At the beginning of 2019, SH3 released a cinematic-pop project with the New York/Baltimore band and boutique music licensing house, With Lions, entitled Far Reaches. The tracks are ambient and freeform whilst maintaining a pop element through SH3’s writing and vocal performance, and has since been remixed by other producers including Cru the Dynamic and NdroiDBeats among others and released as Far Reaches, Reimagined. That same year, SH3 released her second solo project, H2 Zoom Voicenotes, which was predominantly recorded by SH3 on her H2 Zoom USB microphone. The project is a collection of demos written by SH3 and produced mainly by her and ProdByBeatcoins — including “Stranger Things.”
