“Odyssey” by AKA KELZZ is an honest album that stands out in a scene rife with competition. Having spent many years in the music industry, absorbing everything from R&B to pop to electronic, this album seems to come from another world. Moreover, every beat and phrase is raw and it is great to hear the artist leaving nothing back in terms of their performance.
“Alignment”, the opener, took my by surprise. Furthermore, for anyone trying to let go of the past and enter the future; this one is for you! It is rapid, intense, and cathartic—a form of musical therapy and it is one of those songs that begs to be played loud.
Then comes “CXNNECTIONS”. This one sent me straight to another place. The vitality in this song reminds me of late-night dance floors and the kind of wordless interactions you create with total strangers when the music is just perfect.
“Memories” is sensual, confident, and unquestioningly personal. The way it honours self-pleasure and self-love without doubt seems revolutionary. It just feels real; it is not shy and it does not ask permission. It reminds us that occasionally the closest relationships begin with oneself.
This album runs strong through “Rage”. This track feels like freedom to anyone who has ever been advised to smile more or felt silenced for expressing rage. “In My Room” might be my particular favourite. It is light-hearted, amusing, and gently innovative. Also, “Cry” has a contemporary touch that makes it impossible not to move to!
