Wale has never shied away from his lyrical pedigree, and on his latest release, ‘Free Lunch,’ the D.C. native leaned all the way into the bars and rhymes. “I wanted to make something I could sneak a lot messages into,” he told us. “Medicine in the applesauce, if you will.” Standouts on his new, snackable EP, the follow-up to his 2017 album, ‘Shine,’ include “My Boy” featuring J.Cole (their streak of strong collaborations continues) and “Ungrateful & Thankful,” which we shot an exclusive visual for in a Spanish Harlem bodega. On the track, Folarin recounts his complicated relationship with hip-hop and his hometown. The video concept, however, is simple. The Maybach Music rapper zipped through the grocery store during the midday lunch rush. Watch his movements while he’s walking in and out of aisles. His food for thought isn’t limited only to his words; what he points out and picks up is just as filling as his lines. Get served.
