Playyard Pulls You In With “Close”

Santa Barbara-based alt-pop duo Playyard gears up for the summer while reflecting on the past as they return with the new single, “Close” out now.

Together as the alt-pop duo known as Playyard, Henry Morris and Michael Sack create the kind of music that makes you feel understood. From riffing on upbeat bass lines in their freshman dorm to formally forming a bandmate-brotherhood, the two have created a collaborative sound that brings a twinge of maturity to a desirably youthful tune. Their newest single, “Close” sounds like summer love while speaking to the fogginess of self-reflection that comes with any major change.

Playyard is the birth child of LA native, Santa Barbara-based college roommates. Morris’s classically trained background and intricate guitar playing in combination with Sack’s self-taught and untouched stylization on both the guitar and piano fuses together the airiness and familiar melody of pop music and the low-slung beats of R&B to create their own unique and alternative sound. After being introduced by a mutual friend to become freshman roommates at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the boys have been inseparable ever since.

Morris and Sack co-wrote their new single, “Close” with Jesse Fink, a grammy award winning songwriter who previously worked with the likes of John Legend and Milky Chance. Alongside Fink, the boys were able to channel all of their pent-up pandemic passions into a piece of music that speaks to past relationships with a sense of simplicity. Although the boys showed up with only a rough song idea, it was clear that Fink could feel their vision as they all ended up with a polished product in just two hours. The breezy chorus of “Close” mirrors the fluidity of the songwriting process, showcasing the serenity that comes from divine sonic collaboration.

Coming off their first year of college with the majority spent in their tiny dorm room creating and making music, the duo released their first single “Long Distance” in June 2019 which resulted in a devoted listener base that’s always itching for more. Now, Playyard’s fans stretch beyond the California coast and into international terrain, gaining the support of about 50,000 monthly Spotify listeners and roughly 2 million streams altogether.
